What not to forget to do in May gardener?
The main miracle of May is flowering. In the south of the country it lazily ends, and in the northern part and beyond the Urals it flies rapidly - just have time to see it. My husband, who was born and lived for many years in the Far East, after moving to the Kuban for the third year is surprised at the local unhurried (from February to May) flowering fruit. In Komsomolsk-on-Amur, this process takes two weeks. But there is a lot of work in May everywhere - in the south, where garden strawberries are already ripening, and in noticeably colder regions where the first radish is sown in the ground. And this season, given the weather vagaries and coronavirus troubles, May will be tense. In order not to forget anything substantial, it is better to make a list of works, then crossing out already completed ones. Add and delete again.
Still about seedlings
It would seem - what can be sown for seedlings in May? Everything has already risen and is heading! In cooler than southern regions you can still sow seedlings at the beginning of the month pumpkins, melons, watermelons and cucumbers. Not too late. There is already a lot of sun, if you also provide heat, seedlings will grow quite quickly.
Fast-growing heat-loving summers can be sown in a greenhouse or a greenhouse for seedlings: nasturtium, annual dahlias, marigold, zinnias, coelosia, decorative pumpkins, decorative beans and other plants. In the first week of June they will be ready for landing in the ground.
With growing seedlings, you still have to bother: water, feed, shade, aerate. By the way if the tomatoes grew very large (30-40 centimeters), and it’s still far from planting, you can cut off their tops, 15-20 centimeters, leaving 2-3 pairs of lower leaves, and root in water. Seedlings will be larger and these plants will take root better. With peppers and eggplant this number does not work.
More about overgrown seedlings: before planting in the soil, the plant should not be allowed to tie buds and bloom, although this process warms the soul and pleases the eye. The plant spends a lot of energy on flowering and fruit formation, it is very difficult for it to take root in the ground after that. Fruits that started in seedling grow worse than those that are already in place and delay the formation of new ones. So it is better to pluck the buds on seedlings even in their infancy.
In general, seedlings with buds are considered overgrown. It would be nice to note when it is planted, and adjust the timing next year. Year to year, of course, is not necessary, but seedlings at the age of the “teenager” take root almost a week earlier than overgrown.
A week or two before planting in the soil, seedlings should be tempered and accustomed to free air: in partial shade, in a place protected from the wind. Direct sun is permissible at first only in the morning and evening.
This year the weather mixed up everything: in Siberia it was possible to plant seedlings in greenhouses in April, but the European part and the Far East did not spoil the heat: part of the Khabarovsk Territory was completely covered with sweets after Easter. But in May, everything will be planted in the greenhouse, all seedlings intended for planting in the soil, sprouted tubers, bulbs, rhizomes, planting material will move there.
The sun is already bright, the day is long, in the greenhouses in May it is hot. Shading for freshly planted and freshly displaced plants, as well as ventilation, are absolutely necessary.
In conditions of high humidity, all kinds of pathogenic fungi feel wonderful. The best conditions for them are droplets of water on the leaves. Therefore, watering should be more careful and make sure that condensation does not drip on the leaves. Well, inspect the plants. If a fungus still worsens, sprinkle with the appropriate preparation (Fitosporin, Trichoderma, etc.)
In greenhouse conditions, in the absence of natural enemies, whiteflies, thrips, aphids, slugs feel great. You can deal with them as folk methods (infusion of hot pepper, tomato tops, decoction of onion husks, infusion of garlic), and with the use of biological products (Fitoverm, Lepidocide). Advanced gardeners can attend to the greenhouse populating predatory ticks - riders.
Someone prefers to use chemicals, and there are many, you can pick up drugs for all insects at once. There is another interesting way, which I do not know where to attribute: processing with a solution of liquid smoke. In a confined space when spraying, diluted in water 1:10 liquid smoke gives good results. I still add eucalyptus oil, half a teaspoon, shake and spray. Then the greenhouse will smell like smoked meats.
Garden work in May
Garden work in May is not just in full swing, but carried out in an emergency: in Siberia - because the soil unexpectedly warmed up in April, in the European part and in the Far East - because the weather and the coronavirus conspired and did not allow work to be done earlier.
Urgent need to sow carrot, parsley, dill, celery, parsnip. They are not afraid of cold soil, and the prolonged rains expected in some regions will contribute to seed germination.
For those who do not expect heat and rain at all, germination can be accelerated by repeatedly washing the seeds with warm water, followed by drying. Seeds are poured into a gauze bag, and washed with water. Some gardeners put bags of seeds for 10 minutes into vodka (who has quarantined it) or 3% hydrogen peroxide. After this, the seeds must be washed in water and dried.
All these manipulations are designed to remove the essential oils that protect the seeds from germination. Next - as usual: grooves, watering, sowing, fall asleep and tamp a little. When planting, alternate carrots in rows with onions: onions will protect the carrots from the carrot flies, and it will protect it from onions.
There are a lot of cold-resistant cultures (those that will survive the cherry-cherry cold, and oak): cabbage, onion, radish, salad, turnip, chard, peas, beans, beet, garlic. All this can be planted as soon as the earth warmed up, according to popular signs - when the leaves are on a birch centimeter size. At the same time, you can plant potatoes. If after emergence the weather “sprinkles” with frost, it will be necessary to spud her “with her head” and there she will calmly sit out the bad weather.
Processing garden strawberries those who did not succeed in doing this in April should urgently do this: when it begins to form peduncles, it is better not to touch it.
Who has not yet acquired perennial herbs, it's time to sow: thyme, peppermint, agastache ("Golden Anniversary" - it is very decorative!), savory, hyssop, oregano. Even if you do not use them in cooking (or rather use them!), They will heal the surroundings with their volatile and attract bees. And the bees will provide the crop.
In May, the weather in many regions planted solanaceous seedlings. The best option is to land in warm, calm, cloudy weather. However, such a combination, even in probability theory, is unlikely. Therefore, it is better to plant seedlings under temporary shelters. Covering material of medium thickness will obscure in sunny weather, protect from wind, reduce temperature extremes. And plants will not overheat in the heat under such shelter. A little more fuss, but better for the plants and calmer to the owners.
By the end of the month you can plant almost everywhere corn, beans, wink. Moreover, in joint plantings, corn with curly beans and pear looks more organic: corn serves as a support for vines, and beans and vigna, in turn, enrich the soil with nitrogen in the root zone.
If frost is not expected, the soil warmed up well, you can plant peanut and seedlings sweet potato. At temperatures below +10 they will have to be covered. Melons in the south land in the ground.
And also May in most regions is the month of the first unpaved radishes! Red and white, crispy and juicy! This is one of the spring joys of gardeners.
The best days for sowing and planting in May, according to the lunar calendar, see in our material The lunar calendar of the gardener and gardener for May 2020.
Orchard in May
In May, the garden is beautiful. Even a badly unbending back is not able to diminish the enthusiasm from this white-foam fragrant miracle. But this is when the garden has already bloomed. And before flowering, you need to work so that the flowering miracle then turns into a fruiting miracle. By the time of flowering, the trees should be ready:
- crowns are cleaned so that each twig is well lit and the whole crown is ventilated;
- trunks processed, all wounds, cracks cleaned and sealed;
- hunting belts are installed;
- trunks are processed;
- trees are fed and well watered - flowering will require a lot of effort.
As soon as the buds on the trees are swollen, it’s nice to simply shake pests from the trees: put any litter under the tree, shake the tree. All shaken - to the fire, unless, of course, the cat was among them (!). The procedure can be repeated in 3 days.
If there is a suspicion that not everyone was shaken, immediately after the second shake, spray the trees with liquid smoke diluted 1:10 with water. Chemical advocates may use insecticides.
Here I want to make a digression: in each particular garden its own sores and its prevalence of certain pests. If you do not kill everyone with insecticides and fungicides, you can see what specific pests are in the garden and concentrate on them. It is advisable to observe and record them. Do not rely on your memory! For gardeners, like fishermen, everything doubles in memories. Gadgets to help you!
Grape in May it will bloom only in the south of the country, but it requires care and care everywhere. If not open yet - gradually open and ventilate. If it is open and ventilated - raise it to the support and straighten it. If already straightened - feed, and, with a lack of moisture, drink.
Raspberries and blackberries straighten, unequivocally cut dry stems, process the root zone. Currant it spreads the leaves early and it is clearly visible on it which branches feel unwell - it is better to cut them so that they do not spread the infection. To treat a root zone and bushes. In May, it's time to dig branches on the layering. Honeysuckle no need to cut in the spring, it is already blooming. Only treat its basal zone.
Everything that has bought and grown in containers is planted! It’s better to plant in the rain - so they take root faster and faster. But not everyone has such happiness, so we land in the weather that is. With a clear sky, it is imperative to cover the seedlings with covering material, so they will better survive the heat, wind, and temperature changes day-night. Before planting, it’s nice to put the seedling in its intended place, move away and estimate the size of an adult plant. If it fits - plant, if not - look for another place.
To the supporters of organic farming, sprinkle the entire garden before flowering, including the earth under the trees with microbiological mixtures.
In early May, it is not too late to vaccinate.
Ornamental garden and flower garden
The decorative part of the garden in May already pleases: the grass on the lawn turns green, frogs in the pond croak, forsythia and tulips bloom. But there is no time to admire. Lawn clean, sow, where necessary, feed to grow more fun.
Form summer flowering shrubs, and in spring flowering, pruning only uniquely damaged branches. All water, feed, process.
Perennials in early spring are good to divide: thickened bushes bloom worse, and planting will allow you to create a single ensemble of repeating plants. If you have nowhere to “shove” them in, neighbors and friends for delochnochki will definitely thank you. You can exchange for something, but then again you have to look for free space.
Irises at the beginning of spring it is necessary to check: the "backs" of the rhizomes should stick out and bask in the sun.
Decorative creepers should be thinned, straightened, fed.
Roses - Ventilate well after winter. The stems of climbing roses to fix on the support. All dry and unnecessary cut. Feed and process.
Cold-resistant annuals at the beginning of the month can be planted in the ground: calendula, cosmea, cornflowers, etc. Heat-loving to plant when the threat of frost passes.
Gladiolus, Cannes, calla lilies, dahlias plant when the earth warms up. That is, if dandelions massively bloom and frogs croak.
In May, it is already possible to clean the perennials of perennials, remove dry stems and fallen leaves - young sprouts will not freeze.
Decorative mulch and paths also require hands (it would be nice, like Shiva - six pairs!). If the mulch has lain for about 3 years, it's time to update it, clean the base.
General remarks on the May gardener's work
Mulching is a wonderful thing, but in the spring it is permissible only where the soil has already warmed up, otherwise it will delay the growth and flowering of plants.
In May, the temperature may well fall below zero in many regions. Therefore, the main plant protection measures should be provided for: a supply of covering materials and a supply, or better, an unlimited amount of water. Before freezing, sprinkling the entire area - water will create a temperature buffer and plants lowering temperature will survive easier.
Smoke is a good option, but it’s pretty expensive to apply it in the light of changed fire laws.
All flowering gardens and early harvests!
