Agrotechnics Root Celery
The popularity of celery has recently increased significantly. Celery is not only an indispensable seasoning for various dishes, but also an excellent medicine for many diseases. It is recommended for diseases of the kidneys, liver, anemia, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, skin and nervous disorders. Used in recipes to lower blood sugar and in some effective diets. In addition, celery is an excellent aphrodisiac.
As we know, there are 3 types of celery. But, what to choose for sowing from root, petiole and leaf? Most of us choose celery root. Why? Celery essential oil gives it a rather harsh aroma that not everyone likes. In the root, it is relatively smaller than in the rest of the plant, so many choose root celery. In addition, the root crops contain salts: sodium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, as well as vitamins BA, B2 and PP. At the same time, its spicy leaves are also edible and healthy.

Of course, it is much more convenient to buy ready-made and packaged celery root in a store or at the bazaar than to engage in seedlings and care for it. But in this case, there is a significant minus - we do not know what fertilizers were used to grow the root crop, how it was looked after. There is an important nuance - when stored on store shelves, the root crop of celery often loses its original appearance - it becomes flabby and loses its flavor.
Growing Root Celery
The choice of seeds should be treated very carefully, the expiration date must be checked. It is worth noting that after two years of storage, celery seeds greatly lose their germination capacity. Most often, foreign celery seed manufacturers are preferred, but the domestic Aelita and Russian Size justifiably deserve respect.
Due to the too long vegetation period of root celery (120 days or more), cultivation in the middle lane must be done by the seedling method.

Sowing root celery seeds for seedlings
It is better to cook beds under celery in the autumn. The soil needs to be dug in the autumn months, preferably adding humus with fertilizers.
In February, the sowing of celery seeds for seedlings begins. Celery seeds germinate quite slowly, so pre-sowing work is necessary. To do this, they are soaked for a couple of days in water at room temperature, slightly dried and planted in specially prepared boxes. Pre-moistened seeds germinate faster.
The soil is standard - in equal parts humus, sand and sod land. Snow is laid in grooves three centimeters deep (if any) and seeds are scattered on top. In this case, celery seeds do not need to be sprinkled, since snow will melt the seeds into the ground during melting. After this, the seeding is covered with a film and cleaned in a warm room, maintaining a temperature of about + 25 ° C. If the selected place for the final planting is small, then the seeds can be planted in small cups.
Since celery, when properly planted, gives active growth, the distance should be considered when planting it.
Planting root celery seedlings
Seedlings of root celery should be planted in the second decade of May on the most illuminated plot of land prepared since autumn. If you do this earlier, then because of the unheated land, celery can all go in arrows. The seeds will be useless, but you won’t get the root crop at all.
Please note that seedlings should not be planted in the soil too deep, the growth point should remain on the surface. After planting, caring for celery is not complicated and will not steal a lot of time.

Celery Root Care
In the care of root celery, the main thing is to monitor the timely weeding of weeds in the rows of planted plants, and timely watering. Celery is drought tolerant, but with a lack of moisture, you should not rely on its yield. So that a crust does not form on the ground, which does not benefit the plant, it is loosened after watering.
To reduce time consumption, you can mulch the soil, this makes it possible to preserve moisture necessary for celery development and growth, reduce the rapid development of weeds in the celery bed, and also prevent the formation of crust.
The agricultural technique of root celery has its own characteristics, and of these, a ban on rooting of the root crop during its growth is very important, which will affect the quality of the fruit. You cannot categorically root root celery; it is better to even clear the upper part of it from the soil.
Root Celery Harvesting and Storage
Harvesting root celery root crops needs some preparation. For one and a half to two decades before harvesting, you need to tear off the lateral leaves, and to further free the upper parts of root crops from the soil. Ripe root crops of celery are harvested in the first decade of October, before the first frosts.
When harvesting, you should monitor the skin of the root crop and in no case damage it. If damaged, it loses most of its properties, including the duration of storage. For easier extraction of the root crop, the earth is moistened with water.
It is necessary to preserve the celery root at a temperature of 0 to + 2 ° C. It is possible in plastic bags in openings or in sand.
