I am a “lazy” gardener and I like it!
It so happened historically that for most of our post-Soviet people, a personal plot is a place of hard work for the sake of getting crops. But, you must admit, the time of total deficit and bursts of elementary products has long passed. Then what is all this for? Why does a working and earning person need all these beds with tomatoes, potatoes, all these waterings, hills, weeding and treatment from pests and diseases? I believe that all of the above makes sense if you love the process itself, if the garden is your favorite hobby. Now answer yourself honestly - is that really so?
For example, growing vegetables does not bring me pleasure. Especially the potato. And many readers of Botanychka, judging by the comments on article 5 of the reasons why I plant potatoes more, took my argument against growing potatoes as a manifestation of laziness. This is partly true. I am a “lazy” gardener. And in this article I will tell you why I like it.
I have a land. Thirty acres near the house. But there is no traditional garden, so to speak. Well, I do not like gardening things. In my opinion, there are two significant reasons that can make a person keep a garden if he doesn’t have a soul for this:
- The desire to have your own chemically “pure”, non-GMO, natural and tasty product.
- The prevailing stereotype: you do not grow potatoes - a bummer, not respecting peasant labor. “Planted, planted, and we will plant” - a variation of this stereotype.
It is pointless to argue with the second option, and readers of this article who think so can stop reading it at this point.
The first option should be dealt with separately. Suppose you managed to grow a good crop of vegetables without the use of chemical treatments and fertilizers (organic farming works wonders). But you’ll be serving it with vegetable oil, meat and bread, which are based on crops in large quantities filled with chemistry.
Say sunflower has high demands on the availability of easily digestible forms of nutrients in the soil. And the fields are first “sown” with mineral fertilizers, and then by sunflowers. About the meat that we buy in stores, in general, I am silent. The same applies to many products on our table, which we do not grow, but buy. So, eating “clean” will not work, unless you completely switch to subsistence farming. You are ready?
About the delicious. There is always an alternative to supermarkets. There is a market or, even better and I’m not even afraid of “social significance” - entrust this work to your neighbors in the plot who love and know how to grow potatoes or cucumbers. So you will kill not one and not two birds with one stone, but perhaps three. First, get a “clean” product (under your control). Secondly, increase the importance of people who like to work on the earth, because they will bring real benefits to you. Thirdly, give them the opportunity to earn money on the business that they love - the cultivation of vegetables.
So, the first thing I refused, living outside the city - is a garden. BUT!!! Not everything is so bad and hopeless. I have a couple of beds for growing my greens: lettuce, parsley, dill, basil, spinach, radish, and the herbs are different. And I sow all this 3 times a year: in the spring, at the end of August and before winter. Such a green conveyor. But no care! Arrange the bed correctly once (somewhere high, and somewhere, on the contrary, deepened), sometimes water it - and you are with the crop!
Options for arranging various beds, including tall and deep ones, are presented in the article Correct beds - less work, more yield.
Without fruit garden
Getting a good and high-quality crop from him will require a lot of effort. For me it is an axiom. The correct agricultural technique for growing most fruit crops includes constant watering, fertilizers, and top dressing (both under the root and leaves), treatment from pests and diseases, proper pruning and shaping. And most importantly - the constant and vigilant control of each tree or bush. Gape a little - and lost the crop.
Without proper agricultural technology, there is no harvest, and fattening, uncircumcised or diseased trees will also be tormented by conscience (not done work). No, I don’t need it! By the way, the already harvested crop must somehow be shoved around the banks, preserved. This is after a working day and, as a rule, in the heat ...
There is, however, a bonus here. Sometimes it happens that an apple tree grows for itself (in my case, 3 apricots and a Hungarian plum) and everything suits it. And they abandoned it, and do not water it, and do not fertilize it, and do not spray it, and she, know herself, regularly, from year to year gives an excellent crop. Such plants, of course, are worth “growing” in your garden and thanking the occasion.
What gardener am I if I do not grow fruit? I am growing. But only that without which “life is not sweet” to me, despite the efforts expended: grapes, figs, quince, persimmons, jujube. In terms of their valuable properties, they are no worse than apples, pears and currants, and in many ways even better.
Say that they require attention no less than the "standard set" of apple trees and pears in the garden? Sure. And maybe even more. Only I like to grow these very crops. I don’t like apple trees. It’s easier for me to buy apples from a neighbor.
Flower garden revision
Flowers, of course, adorn our garden, but remember how many times you sighed: "dig out (put in storage, process, plant, etc.) tulips, gladioli, dahlias, hyacinths ..." There is no place for lazy people at the flower garden! And these annual petunias, which are so beautifully and elegantly hung from a cache-pot in the gazebo (in other people's photos) ...
Behind all this is titanic work! And daily. Grow seedlings, water twice a day in summer, feed every other day and methodically pick faded flowers every day ... Not a day without attention! Popular perennial flowering plants will also require constant monitoring and care from you.
Here, again, it is worth listening to the heart, not the mind. Love flyers, like me - hydrangeas and roses? Sow, water, process, fertilize - that's why it is love! Even when we get tired from work, we go to our favorites, and some of us also talk to them ...
Separate song - lawn
I mean a real lawn, not an ordinary green lawn. The lawn is a very beautiful picture, but hard work is behind it. Under it, the site must be carefully aligned, then pick up and buy the right grass. Sow, regularly water and feed. And so, when she, the grass, finally grew, a real marathon begins.
If you want to have a well-groomed appearance on your lawn, then reconcile - every 5-10 days (it all depends on the climate and season) you need to cut the grass. The lawnmower is a heavy thing and will perfectly replace a visit to the fitness room. Moreover, this lawn needs to be periodically aerated, cleaned off dead remains, fertilize and water. Yes, by the way, it’s worth remembering about nerves - dandelions will annoy you very much and spoil the look of your lawn. You will find a way out quickly - herbicides. Here you have a clean potato! She’s growing nearby ...
So what does it turn out to tear, chop down and roll everything up with asphalt? Why so dramatically? You can create a garden for lazy (or rather working) gardeners who like to grow plants and do it with pleasure, but cannot (or do not want to) take it all their free time.
What is a lazy garden?
There are many plants that require minimal care (so as not to wean from gardening), but at the same time will please you, and even year-round. First of all, these are conifers. They are frost-resistant, calmly withstand drought, dispense with virtually no fertilizers and chemical treatments.
Yes, anything can happen, and without control of the sanitary situation, this can not be done, and, perhaps, some instances will need a haircut. But these works cannot be compared to caring for fruit trees. And the choice of conifers is large, and for any climate.
Although, acquiring and planting one or another coniferous plant in your own area, it is worthwhile to study its “technical” parameters first, what it needs and how it will grow. Say thuja, with its superficial root system, still requires watering. Some species and varieties need shading in late winter – early spring so that the needles do not burn. And some, as a result, will grow into huge 20-meter monsters and will look ridiculous on your site of 6 acres, and they will obscure it greatly, preventing others from growing.
An overview of the most unpretentious and decorative pines read in the material Spectacular pines on the site - planting, formation, species and varieties.
There are unpretentious and at the same time very decorative trees and shrubs. The vesicles are great, and there are varieties with different foliage colors - yellow, green or red. There are the same color and unpretentious barberries. There are different kinds of derrens, snowberry and elderberry. There are willows with a twisting shape of branches, unpretentious hosts, frankincense, mahonia, maklea, fern, ornamental cereals and much more.
Go, for fun, to the nearest garden center and see what a huge list of ornamental plants they offer. More often, much more than fruit. Why? It’s just that today people want more beautiful than fruitful. This is the command of the time!
There is another option that will require time and knowledge from you - to try to create in your area a certain stable plant system that "works" without human intervention. This topic is now fashionable and popular, it is widely discussed in online publications. There is a lot of literature on this subject and many documentaries have been shot.
The symbiosis of forest and traditional fruit crops can give incredible results. Such a kindergarten will require minimal care, will be more or less free from pests and diseases (completely - hardly), but also productive in terms of harvest.
But, as I said, you need to work hard, choosing the right plants and planting them in a certain way. With proper arrangement in such a garden, even weeds will have no place. But there will be many birds, and maybe animals (do not be alarmed, I'm talking about hedgehogs and lizards).
By the way, some seedlings for this version of the garden can not be bought, but taken in the wild. Just don’t think that I urge to plunder the forest, no. Often they grow on roadsides and in forest plantations as self-seeding, which has little chance of surviving among large trees. But in the spring, the seedlings of wild game pears will delight you with their magnificent flowering, and from the self-sowing of elm, gledichia or linden, you can form a hedge or attractive forms.
In general, if there is a site, then whatever you grow on it, there will always be work. Only I prefer to "remove the blinkers" and look around. What do I see? The huge diversity of the plant world and from this variety you need to choose what is closer to you.
Do you like growing potatoes? God help you, I will gladly buy it from you. I like to grow unpretentious and pleasing to my eye plants. We are not for the garden, but the garden for us!
Why do you need a garden? For hard labor, or for the pleasure of simple and even creative work? For me, the answer has long been obvious. I am a “lazy” gardener and I like it!
Have a good harvest ... What am I talking about? Perhaps better: love yourself in the garden!
