Is it worth growing caraway seeds in your garden? If only for the sake of getting seeds, then it’s not worth it: seeds can be bought on the market. But you will not find young fresh caraway leaves on the market. Thus, for me personally, this question was resolved: I adore salad from young leaves and stems of caraway seeds, as well as green borsch. Cumin is a wonderful spice that can be added both to various culinary products, as well as to pickles and preserves.

Caraway (Carum) - a genus of perennial or biennial plants of the Umbrella family (Apiaceae), of which the best known species Caraway seeds (Carum carvi) Folk names: field anise, wild anise, cumin, cumin, kimin, anise, gunba, gantry, ganus. It is used in cooking and medicine.

In Europe, caraway seeds were common in the Middle Ages and mainly as a medicinal plant. In medicine, caraway seeds are widely used, containing essential caraway oil and many useful substances. The therapeutic effect of caraway seeds oil is antiseptic, bactericidal, anthelmintic, antispasmodic, expectorant, soothing, anesthetizing.

Caraway growing

Caraway seeds are unpretentious plants, not demanding on the soil. The main condition is that the soil is fertile, well seasoned with organic fertilizer.

Caraway can grow in different places, even in rows between fruit trees. Just keep in mind that in a shaded area the yield of caraway seeds will be slightly less. And the aroma will be weaker. Therefore, it is better to choose a place brightly lit. Before sowing, the soil must be dug deep.

Cumin is grown in a non-seedling way. Two sowing periods are possible: spring and winter. With winter sowing use dry, not processed seeds. They are sown in rows with 45 cm row spacing. Caraway seedlings require a single thinning so that at least 20 cm remain in the row between the plants.

With spring sowing caraway seeds must be soaked for a day - to increase germination. If after this the seeds are warmed up in the sun, this will accelerate the germination period.

While seedlings of caraway will only rise, weeding is necessary. In the future, crops will need only loosening, fertilizing (2-3 times with mineral fertilizers), watering (especially during the stalking period and at the beginning of flowering).

Seeds fully ripen in July and quickly crumble. Therefore, the harvest of caraway seeds should begin to be harvested at the beginning of their browning.

Harvesting caraway seeds is as follows: the whole plant is torn out, tied in bundles and placed in a shaded place, under a canopy. Under them, it is necessary to lay the material on which ripened seeds will crumble.

In one place, caraway seeds grow for two years, and tolerates winter well.
